CONTEXT
When the USA was selected as the Country of Honour for the 2018 Thessaloniki International Fair, Greece was a country that had experienced 8 years of deep recession and an economic crisis. Even though recovery had slowly begun, society’s hope for a better future had dimmed and a whole generation of young Greeks had left the country in search of opportunities. To honour the long relationship, shared values, and special bond between our nations, the US Embassy in Athens wished to contribute to the effort of rebuilding positivity amongst Greeks.

WHAT WE DID
FOR THE PROJECT
Together, we decided to tell the tale of the country’s recovery through a 3-phase, multichannel campaign, inspiring brain gain and encouraging those still connected to the homeland to return. After several strategic and creative sessions, we developed the umbrella idea of #makingithappen – spotlighting Greeks excelling in their areas of expertise, whose successful careers were nurtured by Greece and the US alike. Through the real stories of real people, we proved that success & prosperity are possible; that bringing back the knowledge and experiences collected after working, studying or living abroad allows us to build the nation’s future on more solid foundations… together.
The collective work of our friendship
Phase 1: Collaboration, Creation, Connection
The relationship between the two nations is a collective effort, one that has been built by many years of cooperation. Thus, the first phase of our campaign kicked off with first-hand accounts of people-to-people power from individuals who returned from, but maintain ties with the United States. They were told through 6 unstructured interviews focusing on the sectors of: business & entrepreneurship, science, education, technology & innovation, culture & the arts. In the background, we unfolded a symbolic representation of this narrative by collaborating with different artists who listened to the stories and depicted them in one big collective work: a single composition that everyone could add to, creating a unified piece, the story of our friendship.
Phase 2: Painting the canvas of our shared future
Just as this international relationship was founded on centuries of collaboration, we expanded the scope of our campaign by building upon its first phase. The next stories added sports, social entrepreneurship and civic engagement to the above sectors; the next overarching theme moved from our shared past to our common future, our joint desire to benefit our fellow humans and build a better world through learning, contact, cooperation, and mutual support.
Phase 3: Dare, Dream, Do
What does it take to make a dream come true? Seeing the path takes vision, paving the way demands persistence and perseverance, and making it happen is a team effort. These are the shared values that connect our two peoples, the engine of change that builds the future. We illustrated this by bringing together people from different fields – businessmen, teachers, artists, scientists and academics, lovers of innovation – whose common denominator is the contact with the USA, either as a real experience or as a source of inspiration. True stories are told about the importance of believing in oneself, of daring and choosing a path “together” in order to turn dreams into reality.
