As the City of Athens’ organization and functions were changing and new online services were being added to its offerings to its citizens and businesses, the city’s vast online content, hosted in multiple websites, was overdue for an overhaul.
Interweave took up the project to redesign and develop a new, efficient and useful website, where all users could find the information and services they needed.
Given the amount of content that needed to be included in the new website, as well as the different types of users the site needed to serve on both ends, we did an extensive content architecture study to determine the website’s taxonomies and content organisation. Additionally, we created detailed personas and their user journeys to uncover the needs of all the different types of the website users.
Mapping and evaluating all existing content, in the main site as well as on all other online digital assets of the city, we determined which content could be moved into the main site, to simplify the city’s digital presence, making it more user friendly for citizens and admins alike.
Identifying best practices from a host of municipal websites, we were able to pinpoint successful solutions to common issues that those kinds of websites need to address.
Embedding a user-centric approach to the design process, we spec’d a series of functionalities that would allow for easy content updating and curation into useful collections for different types of users (such as citizens, business owners etc). Serving the same goal, the UI/UX design and wireframes emphasised usability and a clean browsing experience.
The actual design came next: clean and modern, with a goal to highlight relevant information (including the city’s Transparency initiative that informed citizens about the city’s KPIs). Enhancing the experience designed, the development process created a fast loading website, with seamless API integrations of the various services the city offered and multiple user roles.
Finally, we concluded the project by optimizing the SEO of the existing content and migrating it to the new website!
